The Challenge

For years, countertop installers relied on cardboard templates to capture the shape of a kitchen. Technicians would cut and tape sheets together right on the job site, carry them back to the office, and then trace them into a computer file for cutting.

It worked, but it was slow and easy to get wrong. A bad measurement could ruin a granite slab, wasting time and materials, which could result in an unhappy customer.

Because measurements had to be processed later, installers couldn’t provide customers with quotes on-site. The delay between templating and estimating slowed down the sales cycle and created extra back-and-forth between technicians, estimators, and the factory.

Our customer wanted to modernize this process. They needed a simple, portable system that allowed technicians to capture digital measurements in the field and leave the site with a signed contract and an accurate template ready for production.

The Solution

S5 Solutions developed a complete digital templating system that replaced cardboard with precision electronics and a mobile app.

At its core is a custom-built embedded controller with high-resolution encoders to digitize the measurement head. Key points are captured and sent to the mobile app via Bluetooth. The countertop layout is rendered on-screen for instant feedback.

This live visualization lets technicians confirm that every edge, corner, and curve has been captured accurately before leaving the job site. No more second visits. No surprises at the factory.

The app also integrates built-in business tools:
Installers can set edge profiles, review measurements, and generate accurate quotes immediately, all within the same interface. Once the design is approved, the digital template uploads directly to the factory to queue the job.
