Countertop Template Digitizer

The Challenge

The customer had us design an electronic system to template countertops for replacement with granite.

We developed an embedded controller that tracks high-resolution encoders to accurately measure the kitchen. The controller connects via Bluetooth to a mobile app that captures the template data and sends it to the factory for cutting.

Contractors typically use large sheets of cardboard to make a life-sized physical template of the area, then digitize it later so the stone can be machined. This new system provides a means to digitize the countertop in place with a mobile app  and send it to the factory for cutting.

The Solution

S5 Solutions created a microcontroller-based system and high-resolution encoders for position tracking. The device connects via Bluetooth to a mobile app that which allows the user to map out the countertop space with sub-millimeter accuracy. The software uses the digitized points to specify the stone shape, ready for cutting. It also tracks user selections, such as the edge profile.

Since all of that is determined on location, it is possible to provide instant accurate quotes. The app can then upload the completed template file to the factory, ready to be manufactured.
